Fall Yoga + Mindfulness Workshop Series

Join us this fall for a 4 week exploration in Mindfulness + Movement + Meditation. Mindfulness + Mindful Movement gives us the opportunity to strengthen our bodies + minds while we release tension and stress and learn to connect fully to our inner resources. During the workshops, we will move through a series of yoga postures designed to invigorate and stimulate our awareness of linking movement to the breath. We will also take time to stimulate ourselves even further through a mindful Yin practice, exploring more deeply, various regions in the body that are notorious for storing stress and creating tension in the body. Each workshop will begin and end with a mindfulness meditation, and as we progress through the series we will delve into the Four Foundations of Mindfulness which include contemplations of: the breath + the body, sensations in the body, thoughts of the mind, and awareness of the mind and our emotions.

Exploring the Body, Spine + Breath, with Martha Johnson & Lori Burt

This workshop is dedicated to discovering ways to move from the spine in order to feel more mindfully connected to our posture, our breath and ourselves, and to gain more length and space in our bodies. During this workshop we will learn about the four key movements of the spine: flexion, extension, side bending (lateral flexion) and twisting (axial rotation). We will explore a variety of postures so that we can easily identify with each spinal movement. Through this exercise we will discover how linking these movements with the breath, can help us to gain greater mobility, flexibility and strength in our spines and throughout the rest of our bodies. The Mindfulness Meditations will be focused on body + breath awareness.

Maximum 10 students. Two teachers and personal, hands-on assists and instructions. All exercises will be carefully reviewed and practiced. Hand-outs will be provided.

Strengthening and Bringing Awareness to the Core Region of the Body, with Martha Johnson + Lori Burt

Participate in an exploration of the hips and pelvis through a lively Hatha Flow (Yang) followed by an invigorating Yin practice designed to awaken the pelvic region of the body, often known as a region that holds on to stress and tension in the body. Yin Yoga uses gentle, long held postures to balance out what is often a Yang approach to exercise (i.e. Vinyasa yoga, running, spinning, etc.). Yin Yoga takes us deeper in the body, releasing tension in the connective tissues found in the ligaments and joints. Hip strength is necessary for day to day life whether we are walking, running, spinning or training for a marathon. The hip joint takes the brunt of the body’s weight and enables all of the actions we need to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. We will take this opportunity to strengthen this very important part of the body. Mindfulness Mediations at the beginning and the end of the practice will be focused on feeling sensations in the body.

Maximum 10 students. Two teachers and person, hands-on assists and instructions. All exercises will be carefully reviewed and practiced. Hand-outs will be provided.

Exploring the Head, Neck and Shoulders, with Martha Johnson + Lori Burt

During this workshop participants will tap into a Yin + Yang practice designed to release tension in the head, neck and shoulder girdle. Practicing yoga increases oxygen and blood flow to the body, and also importantly to the brain. We spend the majority of our life with gravity pulling us down towards the earth and with blood flowing downwards often pooling in the feet. This practice will give us an opportunity to increase blood flow to our brains improving overall feelings of well being. Shoulder and neck tension can be caused by many things, and often metaphorically, it can feel like we are literally “carrying the weight of the world” on our shoulders. This workshop will focus on ways we can reduce tension in our head, necks and shoulders and alleviate the stress that can build up in this region of the body. Meditations will be based on exploring awareness about the thoughts in our minds.

Maximum 10 students. Two teachers and person, hands-on assists and instructions. All exercises will be carefully reviewed and practiced. Hand-outs will be provided.

Practicing Twists and Backbends to Explore Open Awareness in the Mind + Body, with Martha Johnson + Lori Burt

During this workshop participants will explore how backbends and twists invigorate our spines and improve digestion and energy flow. Practicing backbends (poses like cobra, bow and wheel), help us to improve our posture and can also help us to overcome back pain. Backbends also open us up to the world and are thought to help us learn to be more courageous. Twists (poses like triangle, supine twists and half lord of the fishes pose), help us to transform our spines by boosting blood flow to the discs, and building strength in the muscles that support the spine. Twists also massage our internal organs helping us improve digestion, along with wringing out toxins and tension from the body. They also help us to stabilize through the core and lumbar spine. Meditations at the beginning and end of this workshop will contemplate on open awareness of the mind and our emotions.

Maximum 10 students. Two teachers and person, hands-on assists and instructions. All exercises will be carefully reviewed and practiced. Hand-outs will be provided.
